Synthetic Grass Installation

Synthetic grass installation is a relatively systematic process that involves more work than meets the eye, as it’s more than just laying sheets of artificial turf over natural grass. This intensive process usually takes only one to two days to finish, dependent upon the space you would like covered. Usually requiring a minimum of two people to complete the installation, you will also need a number of equipment and tools, including rakes, rollers and flattening tools to properly install synthetic grass.

Before you can begin the installation process, there is some prep involved. This includes properly determining your workspace to ensure that you have adequate amounts of synthetic turf to cover your lawn area. It’s also important to make sure you have cleared the space of any additional debris that could hinder the process.
The first step involves measuring the area and identifying the boundaries in which you’d like to install the artificial turf. The next stop involves the removal of any existing natural grass or ground from this established area by digging or using a lawn mower. This is done to ensure that you have a flat surface to lay the synthetic grass to create the level space to run or walk on the turf. This is usually achieved by using a roller or flattening tool and once this is completed, the first layer of foundation will be laid.

The first layer of artificial turf consists of covering dirt with at least one inch of decomposed rocks around the entire area. The rocks are used to create a smooth concrete feel, considering that dirt doesn’t remain even and level. Once the foundation is secured, the space is primed to la down the synthetic grass. Artificial grass installation is similar to installing carpet in the home, as installers lay layers of artificial grass evenly next to one another, until the whole area is covered. Extra turf is left on the outside areas and tucked in to create a clean and strong fit, free of gaps.

Next, it’s time to make sure that the infill is evenly distributed into the artificial turf. Using a broom to spread the infill is key and this process is done to ensure that the blades of the synthetic grass are able to stand upright. Additionally, the infill layer in synthetic grass also aids in replicating the comfort and cushion of natural grass. Once your synthetic grass is installed, now you must determine how to maintain your new artificial turf. Well, luckily artificial turf requires very little maintenance, compared to regular grass. Synthetic grass is hassle free and long gone is the days of worrying about watering and mowing your lawn. Artificial turf is also very pet friendly, as animal waste can easily be picked up and the turf won’t show ay signs of residue or yellowing, always maintaining its green, lush appearance.

Overall, the hard work that goes into installing synthetic turf is more than worth it, as this one time installation process allows you to have the benefits of natural looking grass, minus the expensive and time intensive upkeep of real grass.

Synthetic Grass Maintenance

All artificial grass and synthetic turf products are high in demand in today’s market for several reasons. It is an investment that pays for itself in the long run, saving money on water and energy bills. This is because synthetic grass is engineered for effortless upkeep. Maintaining any artificial grass lawn is simple and requires minimal money, time, and energy. Nowadays, when society is busier than ever, maintaining a lawn should be the least of our worries.
Whether maintaining a backyard putting green or a larger commercial landscaped area, artificial turf is much easier to tend to than a regular lawn. An hour of watering a regular lawn is equal to about 220 gallons of water. During a time in which water conservation has become a social responsibility, we can all do our part by completely relinquishing our dependence on water for our own lawns. With a synthetic grass lawn, absolutely no watering is needed, eliminating time and water spent just to keep natural grass alive.

Synthetic grass products are also built with an internal draining system. Should rainfall, pet urine, or other liquids come into contact with the turf, it will pose no threat to its composition. A water permeable backing allows for liquids to filter through the surface without building up. This allows for both vertical and horizontal drainage. This drainage system prevents any bacterial spores from growing within the turf. Thus, the turf products are able to drain themselves to prevent any buildup.

Concerning basic maintenance of artificial grass, main priorities are to keep the surface clean from debris, leaves, and other objects that can get stuck in the blades. Keeping artificial turf clean from debris helps to ensure its realistic and healthy appearance. Rainfall is a natural helper to clean airborne debris and small particles from the turf. Simple hosing down of turf also helps in areas where rain is limited. Maintaining the aesthetics of artificial grass is very simple. A hard bristled brush can be used to brush turf blades in different directions to maintain its upright position. If brushed too much in one direction, the blades will learn towards that direction. Brushing turf prevents matting and clumped areas, making artificial grass look more natural.

Compounds and liquids such as oil, grease, and acidic solutions should not come into contact with artificial turf. These liquids can damage the tint and color of artificial grass, thus making it less green or discoloring areas that have come into contact with these solutions. Synthetic grass is also engineered to have a stain resistant surface. Should staining occur, however, simple household cleaners, such as soap and water, can work well in washing away stains. Another important factor to note when taking care of your artificial grass yard is to refrain from parking vehicles or large automobiles on your lawn, which could damage the surface. Hot exhaust should never come into contact with synthetic turf yards. Overall maintenance for synthetic grass lawns is minimal, allowing you to enjoy hassle-free living. Artificial turf lawns are the ultimate low maintenance alternative to a natural lawn.

Artificial Grass History

Synthetic grass lawns are made from something known as artificial turf. The idea behind this is simply to mimick the look and feel of natural grass using synthetic materials. This has many benefits allowing you to create a ‘luscious’ and green environment where you might be unable to maintain healthy grass otherwise. For example if you have a lawn that is constantly walked on, perhaps in a commercial area for example, then replacing these with synthetic grass lawns will mean that others can walk on it without it dying.

Another popular use for them is in sports where the grass creates the image associated with the sport while providing a soft ground to play on that won’t become muddy or dry. Similarly these are very useful in extremely hot countries where grass either can’t grow at all or looks very dry, or in very wet countries where the grass would otherwise appear muddy or dirty. They can also be used by those who simply don’t want, or don’t have the time and resources, to maintain the grass themselves. This way synthetic grass lawns always end up looking well kept and that reflects well on the grounds and the business or individual that reside there.

Generally though synthetic grass lawns look very realistic (particularly on television), it’s usually possible to tell them by the feel of the grass. There are multiple types of synthetic grass lawns and they have developed considerably over the years. The first notable example of artificial turf was created by a team lead by David Chaney who was at the time dean of the North Carolina State University. The first applications of this was generally in sports and Sports Illustrated would declare Chaney as responsible for making indoor baseball possible.

In 1965 artificial turf became more popular and more widely used with the introduction of AstroTurf installed in the then-new Astrodome, Texas. This use spread to other sports and countries and was soon seen in European football in certain teams that sported ‘plastic pitches’ (as they were often known). In 1988 however they were banned by the English Football Association. This was partly due to the turf being too hard to be used for sports and creating injuries. This lead to the development of softer and more forgiving turf which used rubber infill and tiny spring-like devices – touted as being as safe as playing on normal grass and in some ways safer due to them not being affected by weather. This has seen AstroTurf and other such artificial grass gain more widespread acceptance in sport once again.

This was not an issue for the commercial uses of turf however which in the 1990s began to be seen more and more in landscaping. It is now seen in not only commercial landscaping but also in residential areas – particularly ‘community’ areas such as retirement villages and psychiatric homes. As the variety of synthetic grass lawns has greatly increased and as water conservation groups see the value of these measures, the use of synthetic grass only looks set to continue.

From Astro Turf to Artificial Grass

You may be familiar with astro turf and how it began as a surface for playgrounds and tennis courts. Now, there’s hundreds of applications and dozens of new variety’s that offer a range of benefits to home owners and public places alike.
Astro turf has progressed a great deal over the past 49 years and has evolved to suit a variety of needs that includes way more options now that just sporting applications.

Constant improvements by the manufacturers addressed issues such as the abrasiveness of the surface and puddles on areas of the turf caused by poor drainage. As a result of this continual improvement effort, modern synthetic turf looks, feels and behaves just like natural grass, but now has a range of applications that the original manufacturers would not have even thought of in 1960.

21st Century uses for synthetic turf:

– Sports surfaces – tennis, bowls, hockey, netball, tennis, futsal, basketball, long jump and triple jump run-ups, handball courts, putting greens and more.
– Domestic applications – lawns, pool surrounds, entertainment areas, patios and pergola areas.
– Commercial property such as hotels, resorts, low rise office buildings.
– As a temporary installation for a special event i.e. garden wedding.
Traditional grassed surfaces are very difficult to maintain in our harsh environment as any cricket tragic will tell you. Up until now, the choice between traditional grass as opposed to synthetic turf was a 50/50 proposition which often depended, not so much on the availability of water, but a range of other issues such as awkward sized plots, maintenance issues, or excessive wear in high traffic areas. The popularity of AstroTurf has been proved over a 50 year time span, and its uses and fans, continue to increase.
